About Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is located in the northeastern region of Rwanda, bordering Tanzania, and covers a vast area dominated by savannah, woodland, and wetlands. Established in 1934 and named after the Kagera River that snakes through it, the park stretches over 1,200 square kilometers. It features seven interlinked lakes, with Lake Ihema being the largest, creating essential habitats for aquatic species, hippos, and crocodiles. Akagera’s ecosystem supports a remarkable variety of wildlife, including the Big Five—elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinoceros—along with giraffes, zebras, and many antelope species. The park underwent significant conservation efforts starting in the early 2000s, including reintroduction of lions and rhinos, which have boosted biodiversity and tourism. Visitors can engage in guided game drives, boat safaris on Lake Ihema, and birdwatching, as the park is home to over 500 bird species including the rare shoebill stork. Its landscape features scenic open plains, acacia woodlands, and marshy shores, providing excellent vantage points and photo opportunities. Akagera National Park appeals to nature lovers and wildlife photographers, offering excellent chances to see large mammals in relatively uncrowded settings compared to other East African parks. The park is managed by Rwanda Development Board with support from various international conservation partners to maintain its natural heritage and foster sustainable tourism.
